In the heart of Ottawa, the Senators are gearing up for a season filled with high expectations and increased pressure as they welcome new head coach Travis Green to the helm. The team, known for showing glimpses of potential in recent years, is now being looked upon to make the leap into playoff contention. Green’s leadership and strategic approach will be put to the test as he aims to mold a group of talented players into a cohesive and disciplined unit that can fulfill its promise on the ice.
“I’ve liked the group since I took over and rightfully so after I’ve seen them,” Green shared. “I think our group is hungry to win and eager to learn and they’ve been working hard. I know they’re excited to get going on Thursday (against Florida).”
With his third stint as an NHL head coach, Green brings a wealth of experience and a track record of holding players accountable. Improving the team’s defensive structure will be a key focus for the 53-year-old coach, who boasts a career record of 141-159-35 from his time with the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils.
One area where Ottawa has notably strengthened is in goal, with the acquisition of Linus Ullmark, the 2023 Vezina Trophy winner, from the Boston Bruins in June. Last season, the Senators and Philadelphia Flyers shared the dubious honor of having the worst save percentage in the NHL at .884, with Ottawa also ranking 26th in goals-against average at 3.43.
Ullmark impressed in training camp and played a key role in the team’s 5-1-1 record during the pre-season. Reflecting on the exhibition games, Ullmark remarked, “It doesn’t really matter what we do in pre-season, we don’t get two points. It’s nice to win but it’s a step in the right direction. Ultimately it’s all about the regular season that gets you into the playoffs.”
On the defensive front, Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub are projected to form the top pairing, while Thomas Chabot is hoping for a strong return following off-season wrist surgery. As the Senators lace up their skates and hit the ice, all eyes will be on Green and his squad as they strive to meet the heightened expectations and make waves in the competitive landscape of the NHL.
