In the early stages of the 2023-24 season, the Philadelphia Flyers are experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions. While the team as a whole has struggled to find success, one bright spot has emerged in the form of rookie sensation Matvei Michkov.
Selected seventh overall in the 2023 draft, Michkov made the decision to come to North America earlier than expected, leaving behind his KHL team, SKA Saint Petersburg. Despite the Flyers’ lackluster 1-5-1 record, Michkov has shone on the ice, tallying three goals and seven points in just seven games.
“He’s a pretty electric player when he has the puck, and he really makes things happen out there,” remarked Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale after a recent game against the Washington Capitals. “He probably could have had three goals tonight, too. Heck of an offensive talent.”
Michkov’s impact on the team has been evident, as he currently leads the Flyers in scoring with three more points than any other player. His performance has even earned him a spot in the team’s record books, becoming the seventh teenager in Flyers history to post six or more points in his first seven games.
However, despite Michkov’s offensive prowess, the Flyers have struggled to find consistency as a team. Sitting at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, Philadelphia has faced challenges on both ends of the ice, scoring just 17 goals while allowing 31 against.
“I think that the biggest key is there’s a frustration level,” explained Flyers head coach John Tortorella. “They want to play well. They want to win a hockey game. You can’t let the frustration turn into cheating. You can’t forget about your structure as we’re going through this.”
As the Flyers look to turn their season around, there is hope for improvement. General manager Daniel Briere set the stage for a rebuilding season last year, but with the addition of a talent like Michkov, there is optimism for a brighter future in Philadelphia.
