Auston Matthews, the star centre for the Toronto Maple Leafs, showcased his readiness for the regular season with a stellar performance in the team’s preseason finale on Saturday night. The 27-year-old phenom scored a classic one-timer goal and also set up the game-winning goal by John Tavares with a beautiful play.
“Just doing what he does,” Tavares praised Matthews after the game. “When he gets time and space he can pull something out of his bag of tricks.”
Matthews had missed his originally scheduled start in the preseason due to an upper-body issue, but he quickly found his rhythm in his second and final exhibition outing of training camp.
“I felt much better in the second, third period,” Matthews confirmed. “Started to get our legs under us.”
Head coach Craig Berube was impressed with Matthews’ performance, noting his strong skating abilities and excellent defensive play.
“He skated really well,” Berube commended. “Defensively, he was excellent. He did a great job down low in our own zone at the end of the game at 6-on-5. Really good job. He was strong on pucks and is moving well. It was good to see.”
The Leafs won their final four preseason games, with Matthews being a key contributor. After scoring 69 goals last season and earning a first nomination for the Selke Trophy, Matthews faces big expectations this season while also taking on the captaincy role for the first time.
“I’m looking forward to watching him grow as a leader,” goalie Joseph Woll said. “He’s a special player and the natural next step for someone like that is learning what it takes to lead a group of men. I’m excited to watch that.”
The Leafs are hoping that Matthews’ leadership qualities, coupled with his on-ice greatness, will have a positive impact on the team. Despite the added pressure that comes with being the reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner and team captain, Matthews remains his cool, laid-back self.
“He’s just laidback,” noted forward Steven Lorentz. “He just does his thing, and that’s what you want out of a guy like that.”
And that thing includes Matthews’ tireless work ethic that has endeared him to his teammates and fans alike. As the regular season approaches, all eyes will be on Matthews to see if he can continue his impressive form and lead the Leafs to success.
