The Toronto Maple Leafs were buzzing at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday as they prepared for their final pre-season matchup against the Detroit Red Wings. Among the excitement and anticipation, one player stood out in particular – Nick Robertson.
At just 23 years old, Robertson has never experienced a season opener in the NHL. However, that is all about to change as General Manager Brad Treliving confirmed that Robertson has earned his spot on the Leafs roster.
“Very proud of him,” Treliving remarked during an interview on OverDrive on TSN 1050. “He’s muscled his way right into a position here.”
With the regular season set to kick off on Wednesday night in Montreal, Robertson is eager to finally be a part of the opening night festivities. “It means a lot,” the young winger shared. “I was actually talking to my parents about it, they’re going to come up for it. It was something I was thinking about coming into camp and I’m glad it could start like that.”
Robertson’s impressive pre-season performance, which included five goals in just four games, caught the attention of new head coach Craig Berube. While his skill and speed were already known, Berube highlighted Robertson’s work ethic and competitiveness as the traits that will set him apart in the league.
“I knew he was skilled, fast, can shoot, but what surprised me about him so far in camp is his work ethic and his competitiveness have been excellent,” said Berube. “And, for me, that’s what’s going to make him a real good player in this league.”
Despite scoring 14 goals in 56 games last season, Robertson struggled to secure a consistent spot in the lineup. However, with a renewed focus and determination, he is ready to make his mark this season. After requesting a trade in the offseason, Robertson ultimately signed a one-year deal worth $875,000 in September.
As Robertson reflected on his journey, he emphasized the importance of turning the page quickly at training camp. His ability to adapt and thrive in the face of uncertainty is a testament to his character and determination. With his parents by his side for the season opener, Robertson is gearing up for the next chapter in his NHL career. The Maple Leafs and their fans eagerly await the debut of this rising star on the big stage.
