In a thrilling pre-season opener, the Toronto Maple Leafs fell to the Ottawa Senators in overtime with a score of 6-5 at Scotiabank Arena. The Monday following the intense game is a well-deserved day off for the team, as they regroup and prepare for the upcoming challenges of the season.
One player who made a significant impact in the pre-season game was Max Pacioretty, who is currently on a professional tryout with the Maple Leafs. The 35-year-old winger scored twice in his debut with the team, showcasing his determination and skill on the ice.
“It was the most nervous I felt in pre-season since I was 20 years old,” Pacioretty admitted after the game. “I don’t think my wife’s watched a pre-season game in 15 years and she was trying to find what channel it would be on back home. Just a lot of stuff.”
After facing multiple injuries, including tearing his right Achilles twice, Pacioretty is eager to prove that he still has what it takes to contribute to a winning team. His ultimate goal is to secure a contract with the Maple Leafs and continue his career in the NHL.
“It’s a privilege to play in this league,” Pacioretty reflected. “When it’s taken from you there for a little bit you kind of realize that, you know, sometimes you can take it for granted. Even just a pre-season game here [with] the history of this club, you know, it got me a little bit nervous. I think that’s a good thing.”
Throughout his tenure with the Montreal Canadiens, Pacioretty faced immense pressure and scrutiny, which he believes brought out the best in him. Now, with a renewed sense of purpose and determination, the Connecticut native is ready to make his mark with the Maple Leafs and prove his worth on the ice.
Head coach Craig Berube praised Pacioretty’s performance, noting, “He had a pretty solid game. I know he scored two goals, but he was strong out there. I thought he was physical and strong on pucks. He did a lot of good things.”
Fellow teammate William Nylander also commended Pacioretty’s work ethic, stating, “He’s been terrific. Working really hard in camp.”
Pacioretty started training camp on a line with Pontus Holmberg and Nikita Grebenkin but was later promoted to play alongside John Tavares, who assisted on his first goal of the game. The chemistry between the two players is evident, and fans are excited to see how Pacioretty will continue to make an impact throughout the pre-season and beyond.
