In the fast-paced world of professional hockey, contract negotiations are a frequent topic of discussion, and Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe is no exception. As he enters the final year of his current deal, the 30-year-old is in talks with the team about his future.
“We’ve talked a couple times. I love it here and I think they enjoy my game too,” McCabe said of the ongoing negotiations. “That’s why you have agents and now it’s training camp time, so I’m just looking forward to being with the fellas and ramping up our game.”
McCabe, who signed a four-year, $16 million deal with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2021 before being traded to Toronto in 2022, is set to make $4 million in the final year of his contract. Coming off a career-best season with eight goals and 28 points in 73 games, as well as a goal in all seven playoff games against the Boston Bruins, McCabe has proven his worth on the ice.
Notably, McCabe is not the only key player on the Maple Leafs facing contract uncertainty this season. Both forwards John Tavares and Mitch Marner are also set to become unrestricted free agents next summer. However, they have indicated a desire to stay with the team, echoing McCabe’s sentiments about their love for the city and the organization.
With 577 career games under his belt, McCabe has amassed 33 goals and 152 points while playing for the Buffalo Sabres, Blackhawks, and now the Maple Leafs. As he navigates the highs and lows of contract negotiations, one thing is clear – Jake McCabe is ready to give his all for the team he loves.
