In a surprising turn of events, the Tampa Bay Lightning have announced Victor Hedman as their newest captain, taking over the role after Steven Stamkos departed to join the Nashville Predators in free agency. This marks the 11th captain in franchise history for the Lightning, with Hedman stepping up to lead the team.
General manager BriseBois expressed his excitement about the decision, stating, “We are thrilled to have Victor leading our team. Victor is a cornerstone player that is extremely well respected by his teammates, coaches, and peers across the NHL. Over the past 15 seasons, he has been a world-class representative for our organization both on and off the ice. Victor embodies what it means to be a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning and is more than ready for this exciting opportunity.”
As for Hedman’s contract situation, the Lightning signed him to a lucrative four-year, $32 million extension in July. This comes after playing out the final year of his eight-year, $63 million contract with a current cap hit of $7.875 million, which will increase to $8 million next season.
The 33-year-old defenseman had an impressive season, recording 13 goals and 76 points in 78 games. He also contributed a goal and seven points in five playoff games before the Lightning were eliminated by the Florida Panthers in the first round, who went on to win the Stanley Cup.
Drafted second overall in 2009, Hedman has spent his entire 15-season career with the Lightning, accumulating 156 goals and 728 points in 1,052 career games. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, winning back-to-back championships in 2020 and 2021 and earning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2020 for his outstanding performance in the playoffs.
Hedman has also received accolades for his individual play, winning the Norris Trophy and being named a first-team all-star in 2018. He is a five-time second-team all-star, solidifying his reputation as one of the top defensemen in the league.
With Hedman at the helm, the Lightning are looking to make another deep playoff run and contend for the Stanley Cup once again. His leadership both on and off the ice will be crucial as the team strives to achieve their ultimate goal.
