In a decision that has rocked the hockey world, veteran defenceman Alex Edler has announced his retirement by signing a one-day contract with the Vancouver Canucks. This news was confirmed by the team on Tuesday, setting the stage for a special ceremony to honor Edler’s illustrious 17-season career.
The Canucks wasted no time in announcing that they will pay tribute to Edler before their game against the Philadelphia Flyers on October 11. Fans can expect an emotional evening as one of the franchise’s most beloved players bids farewell to the ice.
Upon hearing the news, Edler expressed his gratitude and pride in retiring as a member of the Canucks. “I am humbled and honoured to officially end my career and retire as a member of the Vancouver Canucks,” said Edler in a statement. “I consider myself lucky to have started my career with such an outstanding organization, in this amazing city, with the best fans in the NHL. Finishing my NHL career where it all began is something very special for myself and my family.”
Throughout his tenure with the team, Edler made a significant impact on the ice. Drafted 91st overall by the Canucks in 2004, he went on to play 15 seasons with the team, notching 99 goals and 409 points in 925 games. His contributions helped lead the Canucks to eight playoff appearances, six division titles, two Presidents’ Trophies, and a Stanley Cup final appearance in 2011.
After his time with the Canucks, Edler spent the 2022-23 season with the Los Angeles Kings, where he tallied two goals and 11 points in 64 games. In total, the towering 6-foot-4 left-shot blueliner amassed 104 goals and 439 points in 1,030 games split between the Canucks and Kings.
On the international stage, Edler also made a name for himself representing Sweden at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where he helped his country secure a silver medal. He also donned the Swedish jersey three times at the World Championship, bringing home gold medals in 2013 and 2017.
