In a devastating blow to the Washington Capitals, forward T.J. Oshie has been ruled out for the entire 2024-2025 season after being placed on long-term injured reserve. The decision came after a grueling medical exam revealed the extent of the 37-year-old winger’s chronic back injury.
In a heartfelt statement, Oshie expressed his struggles over the past season due to his injury, stating, “The last season was challenging for me, my family, and my teammates as I dealt with a chronic back injury that kept me out of the lineup. I have used the offseason to explore and pursue long-term solutions for my injury.” Despite the setback, Oshie remains determined to recover fully and continue supporting his teammates and the organization. He also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of Capitals fans during this difficult time.
A true veteran of the game, Oshie hails from Mount Vernon, WA, and tallied 12 goals and 13 assists in 52 games last season. He achieved a milestone 1,000 games-played mark during a matchup against the Vancouver Canucks on Mar. 16, showcasing his longevity and dedication to the sport.
Capitals general manager Chris Patrick echoed his support for Oshie, emphasizing the team’s commitment to helping him find a lasting solution to his injury. Recognizing Oshie’s invaluable contributions both on and off the ice, Patrick affirmed, “T.J. is a vital member of our team and continues to be an indispensable member of the organization and leadership group.”
Selected 24th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Oshie boasts an impressive career spanning 16 seasons with the Capitals and St. Louis Blues, accumulating 1,010 games played. With 302 goals and 695 points under his belt, Oshie ranks 37th all-time among U.S.-born players, solidifying his legacy in American hockey history as a true standout talent.
