In a shocking turn of events, Vancouver Canucks centre Dakota Joshua dropped a bombshell on Tuesday. The 28-year-old revealed that he will not be ready for the start of training camp after undergoing off-season surgery to remove a cancerous lump on his testicle.
This revelation comes just months after Joshua signed a lucrative four-year, $13 million deal to stay with the team. The native of Dearborn, MI, emphasized the importance of quick action in catching the cancer early. “Although it was very difficult to face the reality of this specific type of cancer, getting checked by a doctor quickly was the best approach and I encourage men to get checked regularly for testicular cancer,” Joshua bravely stated.
“As I continue with my recovery, I thank everyone in advance for respecting my privacy concerning this matter,” Joshua continued. “The team will provide updates as appropriate. In the meantime, I thank everyone for their support and understanding.”
Despite this setback, Joshua has been a key player for the Canucks over the past two seasons. After starting his NHL career with the St. Louis Blues, he made an impact in Vancouver with a career-high 18 goals and 14 assists in 63 games last season.
With training camp set to open in Penticton, BC on Thursday, the Canucks will have to forge ahead without one of their key players. The team, fans, and the hockey world at large will undoubtedly rally around Joshua as he focuses on his recovery.
