The New Jersey Devils are gearing up for the start of the 2024-2025 season, but unfortunately, they will have to do so without one of their key players, Luke Hughes.
The team recently announced that the talented defenseman will be sidelined for the next six to eight weeks due to a left shoulder injury he sustained during off-season training. However, there is some good news as Hughes is not expected to undergo surgery for his injury.
At just 21 years old, Hughes has already made a name for himself in the NHL. The younger brother of Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes and Devils center Jack Hughes, Luke was selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft after his impressive performances with the USHL’s U.S. National Development Team.
Hailing from Manchester, NH, Hughes made his NHL debut during the 2023-2024 season and quickly established himself as a valuable asset to the Devils. In 82 games, he recorded nine goals and 38 assists, showcasing his offensive prowess while averaging over 21 minutes of ice time per game.
Hughes’ standout rookie season earned him a nomination for the prestigious Calder Trophy, which is awarded to the league’s top rookie. Although he ultimately finished third in the voting, behind Brock Faber of the Minnesota Wild and Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks, Hughes’ potential and impact on the ice were undeniable.
Despite the setback of Hughes’ injury, the Devils are ready to hit the ice for their season opener on October 1 against the New York Rangers. As they look to make a strong start to the new season, they will undoubtedly miss Hughes’ presence on the blue line, but are hopeful for his speedy recovery and return to the lineup.
