In an exciting turn of events, the Toronto Maple Leafs have finally put an end to the stalemate with restricted free agent Nick Robertson by signing him to a one-year, $875,000 contract. This move comes after Robertson had requested a trade from the team back in June, causing tension between the player and the organization.
Last season, Robertson showcased his talent by notching 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games for the Maple Leafs. However, he found himself frustrated as the team utilized his waiver eligibility to make other roster changes, limiting his playing time. Despite dressing in six playoff games against the Boston Bruins, Robertson was unable to register a point, highlighting the need for a fresh start.
TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger revealed that Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving had explored trade options while keeping in touch with Robertson throughout the off-season. With a potential for a larger role at left wing under new coach Craig Berube, Robertson has the opportunity to prove his worth to the team.
Treliving publicly addressed the situation earlier in the summer, expressing his belief in Robertson’s talent and the important role he plays in the team’s future success. “There is great opportunity for Nick here. We need him to be a good player for us,” Treliving stated. Despite the trade request, Treliving remained firm in his desire to keep Robertson in a Maple Leafs uniform.
Since being drafted 53rd overall in 2019, Robertson, a native of Pasadena, Calif., has accumulated 17 goals and 34 points in 87 games for the Maple Leafs. With his signing, the Maple Leafs are no longer vulnerable to an offer sheet, allowing them to focus on potential additions to the roster.
As per Dreger’s report, veterans Max Pacioretty and Jani Hakanpaa could be the next targets for Maple Leafs’ acquisitions. With the Robertson situation resolved, the Maple Leafs can now shift their focus to strengthening the team for the upcoming season.
