In a solemn and touching tribute, the Calgary Flames gathered at the Saddledome to honor the memory of Johnny Gaudreau, the beloved former star player whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating accident.
The mood was a mix of emotions – hugs, tears, laughter, and stories shared among teammates, executives, and fans who came together to pay their respects to Johnny and his brother, Matthew, who lost their lives in a senseless tragedy caused by a suspected drunk driver in New Jersey.
The Flames community rallied around each other on this somber occasion, with Flames general manager Craig Conroy, franchise legend Lanny McDonald, and current captain Mikael Backlund taking the stage to share heartfelt memories of Johnny as a person, not just a hockey player.
Backlund fondly recalled Johnny’s laid-back personality, his talent on the ice, and his unique way of making everyone around him feel at ease. “Come on, Backs, talk to the coach and get us a day off,” Johnny would say, urging his teammates to relax and enjoy life beyond the game. Backlund choked back tears as he reminisced about the good times they shared, including a special moment at Andrew Mangiapane’s wedding.
Conroy, the man who believed in Johnny’s potential and brought him to Calgary, recounted the amusing story of Johnny’s unconventional pre-game meal – ditching a sub sandwich for a bag of Skittles on a flight to his NHL debut. Despite initial doubt, Conroy soon realized that Johnny’s unorthodox habits were all part of what made him extraordinary both on and off the ice.
The outpouring of love and support at the vigil underscored the impact Johnny had on his teammates, his fans, and the entire hockey community. As they remembered him, they vowed to carry on his legacy of joy, camaraderie, and passion for the game. Johnny may be gone, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
