Stephane Veilleux, the former hockey player dropped off at Tavern 23 in Edina, Minn., is facing a challenging recovery process after suffering a burst C1 vertebrae injury. Despite the seriousness of his condition, Veilleux bravely walks into the restaurant, looking for a familiar face among the booths. After exchanging an emotional hug with a friend, he reflects on the shocking turn of events.
The device supporting Veilleux’s neck injury is a seven-pound apparatus made of graphite rods and rings that are screwed into his skull by titanium pins. This halo vest is designed to immobilize his neck, giving his vertebrae a chance to heal. As Veilleux explains, he will have to wear the halo for at least three months, with the possibility of an extension depending on the results of a CT scan in September.
Despite the challenges ahead, Veilleux maintains a positive attitude, ordering a nutritious salmon salad and a glass of cold milk to support his recovery. He jokes about “feeding those bones” with the necessary nutrients, emphasizing his commitment to healing through natural means. His determination is evident as he declares, “I’m going to be a fighter. There is no room for self-pity.”
While Veilleux admits to having tough days and occasional moodiness, he remains grateful for the support and opportunities he has. The prospect of potential surgery to fuse his skull to his spine looms, but Veilleux’s focus is on staying disciplined and dedicated to his recovery process.
In a touching display of resilience, Veilleux’s unwavering spirit shines through as he faces the challenges of his injury head-on. As he navigates this difficult journey, his determination and positive outlook serve as an inspiration to those around him.
