The hockey community is reeling from the tragic deaths of NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who were killed last week in a devastating accident involving a suspected drunken driver while they were out riding their bikes in New Jersey.
Jaromir Jagr, a former teammate of Johnny Gaudreau with the Calgary Flames, took to social media to share a heartfelt tribute to the talented player. In a video posted on Tuesday, Jagr reminisced about the moment when Gaudreau assisted on his 766th and final goal in the league. “It was a beautiful pass above all,” Jagr wrote in Czech. “Unfortunately, life can be sometimes unbelievably cruel. Thank you, Johnny Gaudreau, that you were here and you gave hope to all those guys by your unbelievable performances that they can succeed at the world class level in the NHL as you managed to do. My sincerely condolences to your family. R.I.P. to you and your brother.”
Support has been pouring in for Matthew’s widow, Madeline, who is expecting the couple’s first child in December. A GoFundMe campaign started by Madeline’s sister, Holland Korbitz, has raised over $500,000, with contributions coming from players and their families across the league. New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin’s family donated $3,000, while Dallas Stars’ Matt Duchene contributed $2,013. The total amount raised has far surpassed the initial goal of $30,000.
Cliff Rucker, owner of the Worcester Railers HC where Matthew played for two seasons, expressed his support for Madeline, making a generous donation of $10,000. “Maddy, the entire Railers HC family stands shoulder to shoulder with you during this incomprehensibly difficult time for you and your loved ones,” Rucker wrote. “You and Matty will always be part of our Railer family, and I hope you can feel the love and support we are sending your way.”
The Gaudreau brothers’ lives were tragically cut short while they were cycling in Oldmans Township. A man driving an SUV struck them from behind while attempting to pass two other vehicles. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and has been charged with two counts of death by auto, along with other related offenses.
As the hockey world mourns the loss of these two young men, no information has been provided yet regarding funeral or memorial arrangements. The impact of their untimely passing will be felt throughout the community for a long time to come.
