As we approach the start of the NHL season, the Detroit Red Wings find themselves in the midst of some contract negotiations with their restricted free agents (RFAs). In this edition of NHL rumours, we take a closer look at the situation with some of these players.
Let’s start with Lucas Raymond, who has been making headlines with his contract talks. It seems that Raymond is looking for a big payday, but negotiations have hit a snag with general manager Steve Yzerman. While Yzerman is known for signing responsible veterans to short-term deals, Raymond’s camp seems to be pushing for a longer contract. According to reports, a deal is not close as Raymond may be seeking a bridge deal while Yzerman prefers a longer-term agreement.
NHL insider Pagnotta has noted that there are comparable contracts in the league that Raymond and his agent may be using as leverage in negotiations. One such contract is that of Seth Jarvis, who is reportedly seeking a lucrative seven or eight-year deal worth around $7.5 million per year. This figure may give Yzerman pause, especially if Raymond is looking for a similar figure.
Comparing Raymond’s stats from last season to Jarvis’, the two players have similar offensive numbers. Raymond notched 31 goals and 72 points with a 19.5 shooting percentage in 17:45 of ice time, while Jarvis scored 33 goals and 67 points with an 18.8 shooting percentage in 18:45 of ice time. Their styles of play differ slightly, with Jarvis taking on penalty-killing duties that Raymond does not. Despite this, Raymond seems to have a higher offensive potential and ceiling at this point in their careers.
On a positive note, there has been progress in the negotiations with Jonatan Berggren. Reports indicate that the two sides are close to reaching an agreement, which bodes well for the Red Wings. Berggren has been developing nicely, with a solid showing in the AHL last season and a strong performance in the playoffs. The 24-year-old Swede has earned a spot as a scoring option for the Wings this upcoming season.
As the summer winds down and the start of the NHL season draws near, all eyes will be on the Red Wings and their efforts to lock up their RFAs. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation continues to unfold.
