In the realm of the New York Rangers, the goalies have been nothing short of spectacular in recent years, showcasing their talent and skill on the ice. The Blueshirts have been fortunate to have more than one Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender within the span of a decade, with Henrik Lundqvist claiming the honor in the 2011-12 season and Igor Shesterkin following suit in 2021-22. As the hockey world eagerly anticipates the upcoming 2024-25 season, the Rangers boast a formidable stable of netminders, with four goaltenders currently on the roster.
The first of these goaltenders to take note of is Louis Domingue, affectionately known as “Sweet Lou,” a 32-year-old Quebec native who recently signed a one-year extension with the team in March, securing a deal worth $775,000. Domingue was recalled from AHL Hartford on April 20, adding depth and experience to the goaltending lineup. Joining him on the roster is Dylan Garand, a 22-year-old Victoria, B.C. native, who was called up from AHL Hartford on May 16, 2024, and is set to make his mark with the Blueshirts in the upcoming season.
Speaking of standout goaltenders, Henrik Lundqvist stands tall as one of the greatest goalies in Rangers history. Not only was the Swedish legend a Vezina Trophy winner in 2011-12, but he also holds multiple franchise records, including most shutouts and wins. With an impressive 64 shutouts and 459 wins to his name, Lundqvist’s legacy is etched in Rangers history. Additionally, he set an NHL record by winning six consecutive Game 7s and represented the Blueshirts in five NHL All-Star Games.
Not to be outdone, Igor Shesterkin has quickly made a name for himself as a formidable force between the pipes. The 28-year-old native of Moscow, Russia, boasts the all-time Rangers save percentage record for goaltenders with over 100 games played, an impressive .921. Shesterkin’s rise to prominence began when he was drafted by the Rangers in 2014 and excelled in the Kontinental Hockey League before making his NHL debut in 2020. Since then, he has continued to impress, earning the title of Vezina Trophy winner in the 2021-22 season and making waves with his remarkable performance.
Joining the ranks of Lundqvist and Shesterkin is another seasoned goaltender, Jonathan Quick. The 38-year-old Milford, Connecticut native showcased his skills in 27 games played with the Rangers in the past season, recording 18 wins, two shutouts, a 2.62 goals-against average, and a .911 save percentage. Quick’s stellar performance, including his 60th NHL shutout on Nov. 22, 2023, solidifies his place as a valuable asset to the Rangers’ goaltending arsenal.
As the Rangers gear up for the 2024-25 season, the team’s goaltending depth and talent promise an exciting journey ahead, with each goalie bringing their unique strengths and experience to the ice. With a legacy of greatness behind them and a future filled with promise, the New York Rangers’ goaltenders are poised to continue making waves in the hockey world.
